A Voice in the Wilderness In Defense of "Mere Conservatism"

Presidential Fatigue

by: R.J. Moeller
Good news for anyone who thought the Presidential primary season couldn’t come soon enough:

(Washington Post): South Carolina's Republican Party will move its 2008 presidential primary forward to Jan. 19…a decision almost certain to spark a cascade of calendar changes that could push the start of voting to New Year's Day or even to before Christmas.

Politicians have different explanations for this – New Gingrich, speaking to the National Press Club Tuesday, blames the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform bill. The former Speaker of the House said the $2300 cap put on private contributions has forced candidates to start earlier and earlier in order to raise the substantial funds necessary to stay in contention.

Under some scenarios, the decision could lead Iowa to hold its caucuses in mid-December, creating an unprecedented situation in which convention delegates are selected in the calendar year before a presidential election.

My question is: Why not make it two years, or three? Maybe there could be an all-Presidential campaigning, all-the-time C-SPAN network where Wolf Blitzer and Chris Wallace could begin moderating debates that would start the day after our next President is sworn-in in January 2009?

What is “Mere Conservatism”?

The basic ideas, ideals, and values that generally define and characterize the central tenets of what today might be termed "modern conservative thought."

We believe that a proper understanding of history, economics, and theology leads to certain conclusions. Many of these are the same conclusions our Founding Fathers arrived at in constructing a "more perfect union."

All ideas and opinions are welcome; not all are correct.
