A Voice in the Wilderness In Defense of "Mere Conservatism"

Sticks and Stones…

by: R.J. Moeller

Bill Kristol of the Weekly Standard was the guest Monday night on the Daily Show with John Stewart. Having just returned from an 8-day exploratory trip to Iraq, Kristol was on Comedy Central to report his first-hand impressions of General Petraeus’ “surge.”

Just in case any of Daily Show’s audience was unclear as to where Stewart pessimistically stands regarding the War in Iraq (and the recent reports that things are going much better over there), he sarcastically opened the exchange by asking, “Let me guess…you’re here to say that the surge is working?”

Kristol responded to each condescending question and snarky comment from Stewart with poise and an affable sense of humor. He calmly explained that the bi-partisan consensus of visitors to Iraq is that things are indeed getting better, and the question now has moved from effectiveness of the surge to how long should we sustain troops over there.

Sensing he was quickly losing his studio audience to the alluring sounds of good news from a war the liberal establishment has banked its future electoral success upon our defeat in, Stewart shrewdly changed the subject to a fail-safe topic: those mean old conservatives.

“Well, what I don’t get is the vitriol and anger your side uses to describe and condemn those of us who are against the war and want to pull out? Why all the harsh rhetoric, and terms like ‘defeatists’ and ‘cut-and-runners’?”

Are you kidding me? A man whose entire career is based upon the tearing to shreds of every minute mistake or misstep that Republicans and Conservatives make is now offended because Bill Kristol has written some “mean things” about Liberals who openly admit they want out of Iraq tomorrow regardless the obvious sanctuary for terrorism and slaughter of millions that would ensue?

Stewart has been on the cutting edge of disrespect and mockery aimed directly at President Bush for five years. His show engages nightly in over-the-top, satirical jihad against the GOP and anyone who is not hip to the Secular-Progressive, Far-Left agenda that so dominates the Democratic Party today. Anytime he crosses a line or is charged with manipulating information to advance his own ideological views on a fake-news program, Stewart cowardly plays the “Just a comedian” card and exits, stage-left.

I don’t mind what the Daily Show does as a comedy program, and I’m not suggesting any Imus-style boycott be perpetrated by Conservatives (we on the Right leave suppression of Free Speech to liberals), but it is worth noting the irony of a comic who pays his bills by ridiculing and mocking people and policies he’s grossly unqualified to comment on being offended when knowledgeable journalists like Bill Kristol accurately label Harry Reid and smug fake-news hosts who say, “The war in Iraq is already lost,” as “defeatists.”

  1. Yeah, I stopped watching the Daily Show after I could predict every joke what was about to be said. Oh, here’s another Bush joke in 3-2-1..there it is….

I prefer watching The Colbert Report, cause at least some of his comedy comes from other things, and he doesn’t genuinely seem to hate Bush (at least on screen) and his jokes appear to be harmless.

  2. Jon Stewart is a comedian on a fake news show, but he did a great job of showing what a fool Kristol is. Stewart is more of a journalist than anyone on FOX.

The only person who could make Kristol look like more of a fool than Stewart did is…wait for it…BILL KRISTOL!

What a tool. Why does a guy who has been wrong about everything he has ever said still have a job?

  3. Your arguments are as sound as your writing is coherent.

On a more serious note, what does that mean. The hyperbole you write with only serves to make you appear to be ill informed.

Kristol has never been right about anything? He claimed Rumsfeld mishandled the Iraq War. However, I can safely assume from your writing you think Rumsfeld was doing a fine job.

Perhaps you could write in a style that most refer to as reasonable.

    Keep on keeping on, rider.

I agree that Stewart’s show has gone drastically down hill, most noticeably since the 2004 elections when he was hailed as some sort of “new voice” for this generation. Sadly, many people do take Stewart’s sarcastic message of Liberalism-good, Conservatism-dumb to heart. When he has a “serious” liberal guest like Brian Williams (NBC Nightly News) or Anderson Cooper (of “360″ fame), he is cordial and attempts to sound like he knows what the heck he’s talking about. When Bill Kristol or Hugh Hewitt come on though, he’s combative and attempts undermine everything they say. When called on his obnoxious behavior, he plays the “just a comedian” card just long enough to say whatever he wants. Stewart is smart, shrewd and successful, and I can’t blame him for that. I just have no patience for a guy like that saying he doesn’t like the names he and his fellow liberals get called by “mean, angry” guys like Bill Kristol and Charles Krauthammer. Deal with it, Johnny-cakes.

    Repack Rider-
Thanks for checking out the blog and offering your interesting take. I obviously disagree with nearly every syllable you wrote, but I understand that someone as liberal as yourself would not care for Mr. Kristol’s viewpoint. I do find it humorous though that you even combine the words “journalist” and “john stewart” in the same sentence. His show is wildly liberal and he manipulates stories for comedic effect, but undeniably he has a Leftist message that he wants to get out (especially to under-informed people between the ages of 18-25 who desperately want to feel like they know what they are talking about but refuse to put any real time, effort, or research into what they poorly pass off as an informed opinion). He feeds on the carcasses of politically-inept viewers who know they should know, but would rather chuckle at Bush-is-a-dumb-dumb jokes than read a book (a whole one) or newspaper or (Gasp!) what Bill Kristol actually says in his magazine The Weekly Standard.

What is “Mere Conservatism”?

The basic ideas, ideals, and values that generally define and characterize the central tenets of what today might be termed "modern conservative thought."

We believe that a proper understanding of history, economics, and theology leads to certain conclusions. Many of these are the same conclusions our Founding Fathers arrived at in constructing a "more perfect union."

All ideas and opinions are welcome; not all are correct.
