A Voice in the Wilderness In Defense of "Mere Conservatism"

With rights like these…

by: R.J. Moeller

The Jerusalem Post today quoted Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as saying his country will not deviate from its “civilian” nuclear program. Defiant as always, Ahmadinejad said:

"Iran cannot hold discussions with countries that do not recognize this right. The Iranian people will ... continue their efforts toward acquiring nuclear energy for peaceful ends."

So there it is: the Iranian people have a right to nuclear proliferation. Interesting that Mahmoud would speak of “rights” and “peaceful ends” in a discussion regarding his UN-defying nuclear program. All this from a man who daily and publicly promises destruction to Israel and America, denies the holocaust, and withholds fundamental rights of speech, press, religion, and assembly.

I would love to get President Ahmadinejad’s response to this Wall Street Journal report from Monday detailing a recent spike in executions inside of Iran:

The…hangings, broadcast live on local television, are among a series of public executions ordered by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad last month as part of a campaign to terrorize an increasingly restive population. Over the past six weeks, at least 118 people have been executed, including four who were stoned to death. According to Saeed Mortazavi, the chief Islamic prosecutor, at least 150 more people, including five women, are scheduled to be hanged or stoned to death in the coming weeks.
Not all executions take place in public. In the provinces of Kurdistan and Khuzestan, where ethnic Kurdish and Arab minorities are demanding greater rights, several activists have been put to death in secret, their families informed only days after the event.

Which rights do you think the Iranian people are in need of more: nuclear or civil?

What is “Mere Conservatism”?

The basic ideas, ideals, and values that generally define and characterize the central tenets of what today might be termed "modern conservative thought."

We believe that a proper understanding of history, economics, and theology leads to certain conclusions. Many of these are the same conclusions our Founding Fathers arrived at in constructing a "more perfect union."

All ideas and opinions are welcome; not all are correct.
