A Voice in the Wilderness In Defense of "Mere Conservatism"

Rush Limbaugh is NOT a Racist

rush_limbaugh-1He really isn't.  You might hate his views, find his personality objectionable, or never listen to his radio show, but the man is not a racist.  Rush has been booted from the investment group that was bidding to buy the St. Louis Rams, but only because he is a hated conservative commentator who happens to be succcessful and uncompromising.  He's not perfect.  He doesn't speak for all conservatives or Republicans.  But he has EVERY right to try and own a team or donut shop or Handy Andy.

Here's Rush, in his own words, explaining what has really been going on the last few weeks since this story broke:

As I explained on my radio show, this spectacle is bigger than I am on several levels. There is a contempt in the news business, including the sportswriter community, for conservatives that reflects the blind hatred espoused by Messrs. Sharpton and Jackson. "Racism" is too often their sledgehammer. And it is being used to try to keep citizens who don't share the left's agenda from participating in the full array of opportunities this nation otherwise affords each of us. It was on display many years ago in an effort to smear Clarence Thomas with racist stereotypes and keep him off the Supreme Court. More recently, it was employed against patriotic citizens who attended town-hall meetings and tea-party protests.

These intimidation tactics are working and spreading, and they are a cancer on our society.

Don't believe the press was out of line in their coverage of Rush's bid to buy a company (even one that happens to be an NFL team)?  Watch this:

  1. I know Rush isn’t a racist, but I guess the whole point of this story is how much of a Rushist the media and most liberal Democrats are. For me, someone who doesn’t listen to Rush all that much (I prefer Medved and Mike Gallager), the key to all of this is that Rush Limbaugh is a radio talk show host…he has no real power…there is no real reason for people to be freaking out. Conservatives like me are worried about Obama’s terrible policies, and rightly so, because he is Commander in Chief and his views are representative of all the leaders in Washington currently. We keep hearing how inconsequential and stupid Rush is…yet all the media does is talk about him and compare his influence to that of a president of the United States. That’s incredible to me and shows, in my mind, just how worried they are about Rush’s ability to effectively communicate opposition to Obama’s plan to change America.

  2. I cannot stand Rush’s show and find his views objectionable. But without question he should be able to be eligible to buy any business that will sell to him. The investment group he was a part of asked him to step down and eventually forced him to. Legally they had the right but the only reason they did it was because of the insane attacks on Mr. Limbaugh. The whole thing is a mess and I promise you the same thing would not have happened had it been Keith Olbermann or Chris Matthews trying to buy stake in a sports franchise. This makes things harder for real debates to take place, and I hope people on both sides of the aisle remember how silly this was in the future when the tables are turned.

  3. Jeff, don’t capitulate to the Right. We don’t have to apologize for being happy that this blowhard lost his chance to own a football team. He’s an idiot and I believe a race-baiting partisan hack. If the NFL doesn’t want him, they don’t have to have him.

  4. Nice to see another liberal so tolerant of people with opposing viewpoints.

What is “Mere Conservatism”?

The basic ideas, ideals, and values that generally define and characterize the central tenets of what today might be termed "modern conservative thought."

We believe that a proper understanding of history, economics, and theology leads to certain conclusions. Many of these are the same conclusions our Founding Fathers arrived at in constructing a "more perfect union."

All ideas and opinions are welcome; not all are correct.
