The Death of the Nobel Peace Prize

NN_27obama2Last year it was Al Gore for an amusing DVD about the weather that he made.  This year President Obama "won" the Nobel Peace Prize for, and I quote, "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."

Sweet Moses, I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.  Rueters news-service, a bastion of liberal white-washed reporting, actually had this to say about the announcement today:

The decision to bestow one of the world's top accolades on a president less than nine months into his first term, who has yet to score a major foreign policy success, was greeted with gasps of astonishment from journalists at the announcement in Oslo.

Bingo.

Similar to my sentiments regarding the creepiness of the children singing praises to our Dear Leader Obama, if you don't know why Barack Obama winning this "award" is a joke then you are part of the problem.  The man did nothing in the senate, but we were promised he would make a difference in the White House.  He's done nothing in the White Houses, even with both houses of congress on his side, and we're told now to wait for his change to sweep the globe.

This is pathetic.

Here's what the London Times thinks of this debacle:

The award of this year’s Nobel peace prize to President Obama will be met with widespread incredulity, consternation in many capitals and probably deep embarrassment by the President himself.

Rarely has an award had such an obvious political and partisan intent. It was clearly seen by the Norwegian Nobel committee as a way of expressing European gratitude for an end to the Bush Administration, approval for the election of America’s first black president and hope that Washington will honour its promise to re-engage with the world.

Instead, the prize risks looking preposterous in its claims, patronising in its intentions and demeaning in its attempt to build up a man who has barely begun his period in office, let alone achieved any tangible outcome for peace.

The pretext for the prize was Mr Obama’s decision to “strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples”. Many people will point out that, while the President has indeed promised to “reset” relations with Russia and offer a fresh start to relations with the Muslim world, there is little so far to show for his fine words.

What does the Master of Rhetoric, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, think of all this?

  1. I couldn’t believe my ears when I heard the news this morning. The “Ego” landed in Copenhagen, but the folks in Oslo gave it flight again.

  2. But… but… if Obama had not won, it would have meant RACISM on the part of those making that decision. We must guard against RACISM at every turn!!

  3. On one hand this matters so little I barely care…mainly because they have given the award to known terrorists like Yassir Arafat and morons like Al Gore. But on the other hand, and this IS important, much of the world will only hear that Obama won and have no idea what is really going on here in America (i.e. Obama did nothing to become president and has done nothing since). People like Obama because he is a blank slate. You can write on to him whatever it is you want to see or believe or feel. He is more than willing to accommodate that. Obama says he is a “citizen of the world.” All he should be is our Commander in Chief.

  4. JTH- Haha. Well put. It is shocking…and very lame.

Ms. Kelly- EXCELLENT point! We must always be on the lookout for racism, or even just potential racism. Very witty comment on your part. ;)

Dexter- Couldn’t agree more. Thanks for commenting.

  5. I couldn’t wait until I got off from work to check your site! I knew it would be poppin with angst and confusion.

I can understand the confusion, but for different reasons. Peace prize? Whaa….Gitmo is still open, he hasn’t aggressively pursued the war criminals of the past administration, and he is doubling down on Afghanistan. Come again?!

But you can’t blame Barack here. He did nothing “wrong” per se…just woke up and was stunned probably like many of us. The silver lining is how graceful he was about receiving the award: “I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many transformative figures that have been honored by this prize,” he said. “I will accept this award as a call to action, a call for all nations to confront the challenges of the 21st century.”

The prize committee clearly has an agenda (who doesn’t?). I feel that they’re trying to galvanize the momentum of Obama and genuine peace around the world. It’s also–in my opinion–a message for America. It’s almost an indictment against Bush. That Obama, just by showing up and attempting to do much (but having done relatively little so far), he deserves a prize after what we all suffered through.

That’s the way that I see it. hmmm…

  6. Who cares what the Nobel Prize people think of America? They have sent other messages in the past, such as rewarding a known terrorist who broke numerous peace accords that he himself signed. His name was Yassir Arafat, as has been mentioned here already.

Of course this isn’t Obama’s “fault” that the Leftists of the world fawn over him, anymore than it was Bush’s “fault” that the Leftists of the world hated him, right?

This will hurt the president in the long run. The American people like some hero-worship, but not blind idolization.

  7. I couldn’t want to get home to read Bradford’s comments defending Obama. Jk.

I get it that Obama didn’t ask for this award, but we should all be able to agree, as even Michael Moore does (http://www.michaelmoore.com/words/mikes-letter/congratulations-president-obama-nobel-peace-prize-now-please-earn-it), that he doesn’t deserve any such recognition. It is an insult to greatness, to individuals who actually have achieved great things, that he has been presented with an honor such as this (and receives similar adulation on a daily basis from our own media).

    This is Atlas Shrugged come-to-life.

  8. Think of how ridiculous this situation must be for Michael Moore to be making sense when commenting on it. Seriously, think about that.

  9. If this a collective accomplish, then spread the Nobel Prices To ALL>WHY To BHO only the Nobel Price? Give this Peace Nobel Price To who, deserve it!

Collective achieve of the World? Give Me a Break!!!

In his statement of being honest BHO, is right, he doesn’t deserve it!

  10. If you’re in the corner and have no money to go out from that point, you would require to take the credit loans. Just because it will help you definitely. I get college loan every year and feel myself OK because of this.

What is “Mere Conservatism”?

The basic ideas, ideals, and values that generally define and characterize the central tenets of what today might be termed "modern conservative thought."

We believe that a proper understanding of history, economics, and theology leads to certain conclusions. Many of these are the same conclusions our Founding Fathers arrived at in constructing a "more perfect union."

All ideas and opinions are welcome; not all are correct.
