A Voice in the Wilderness In Defense of "Mere Conservatism"

Brown Brings Home The Bacon

There is justice in a world where Ted Kennedy's senate seat will be the deciding vote against Obamacare.

In the infamous words of George W. Bush: "You did a heckuva job, Brownie!"

Scott Brown (R) is the now the junior senator from the state of Massachusetts.  He also has two really cute daughters.  Seriously, check them out standing on either side of his podium.  (I know two gals who will soon be my Facebook friends.)

A month ago no one gave the guy a shot.  Some say it was a referendum on President Obama and the far-Left Democrats running things in Washington the past year.  Some say it was a poor candidate for the Dems in Martha Coakley.  Whatever the reasons, and I believe they are many, the Republicans now have the key 41st vote to oppose health care, cap-and-trade, and every other top-down socialist policy the current administration attempts to ram down our throats.

There are some tensions between the Coakley campaign and the Obama White House, so you be the judge if this was a parting shot or not from her concession speech:

Coakley said she received a phone call from President Barack Obama: “He actually just called me before I came onstage to say that we can’t win them all, and he knows that better than any, as he told me."

This was an exciting, historic night for millions of Americans.  Now the task for all Center-Right politicians in congress is to harness this disdain for the systemic corruption and rampant growth of government, and really follow through on promises of fiscal responsibility.

Oh, and btw, how awesome would it be if Brown was the Republican picked to deliver the GOP's response to Obama's State of the Union address next week?  I think I'm on to something here.

  1. Last night was such an exciting display of democracy in action. I consider myself an independent, but I voted for Brown to send a message to Washington: You have gone too far, too fast.

Like you said, RJ, the GOP has a chance to prove themselves worthy by standing on principles of limited govt and fiscal responsibility. The Left will never stand on these things. I pray republicans will, or we’ll have to look elsewhere going forward.

  2. barney frank’s distict went for scott brown last night. keep an eye on the tea party folk, they are solid, informed, dedicated and want a complete change of direction for the u.s. attend a gathering/meeting and you will all be surprised at the intelligence and motivation which blows the media sliming of them.

  3. That is unbelievable that Frank’s district went for Brown. What would it take to get that walking meatball out of office?

People need to realize that while this is a big victory, there is still the ideological battle over whether or not the government should provide health care or not. The Left isn’t going away on this.

What is “Mere Conservatism”?

The basic ideas, ideals, and values that generally define and characterize the central tenets of what today might be termed "modern conservative thought."

We believe that a proper understanding of history, economics, and theology leads to certain conclusions. Many of these are the same conclusions our Founding Fathers arrived at in constructing a "more perfect union."

All ideas and opinions are welcome; not all are correct.
