A Voice in the Wilderness In Defense of "Mere Conservatism"

Jim Wallis: The President’s Man

Jim Wallis is a self-described evangelical Christian and currently serves as President Obama's primary religious adviser.  Wallis means well, and seems to have a genuine heart for the poor and oppressed...but the man supports politicians and policies that are counter-productive (and in some cases, un-biblical).

My biggest problem with religious liberals is their endorsement of wealth redistribution via the federal government. Here is Wallis in his own words:

I will be writing an upcoming piece on "social justice", and Wallis is one of the most prominent religious leaders in the nation who fully endorses and promotes the term.  Until then check out this piece by Dr. Albert Mohler of Southern Theological Seminary on the controversy surrounding Glenn Beck's denouncement of it.

  1. What Strikes me after reading this piece and the one about about Glenn Beck is what we forget about God’s Word. I recently studied The Epistle of Jude. This is a very direct letter about people who claimed to be Godly but were/are not. I think what we forget is that this life is, indeed, a test. God needs to weed out the ungodly. Whether one is a life long liberal or conservative–well, God can forgive most anything. But He seems to come down severely and most decidely when one considers idolitry, disobedience and fornication.
I am reminded of the parable of the 3 men: One was given 5 talents and turned them into ten; one was given two talents and turned them into 4; one was given one talent and just buried it. The two who had doubled their “gifts” were considered “true and faithful servants”. The one who did nothing with his was condemned as wicked and slothful. And his one was taken from him and given to the man that had made 5 more from his first 5 gift.
It says the one who had five talents went and traded with them and made another 5–no “sin” or wrong-doings involved. Can we conclude from this that making a profit is no sin? I tend to think so.
But I still think what we forget is, when the second coming happens, we will all bow our knees to God and Christ and we will all live in a Theocracy. There are those of us who are willing to do that even before Christ comes a second time. But that is a choice–no force involved–governmental or otherwise.

What is “Mere Conservatism”?

The basic ideas, ideals, and values that generally define and characterize the central tenets of what today might be termed "modern conservative thought."

We believe that a proper understanding of history, economics, and theology leads to certain conclusions. Many of these are the same conclusions our Founding Fathers arrived at in constructing a "more perfect union."

All ideas and opinions are welcome; not all are correct.
