Rep. Woolsey: “Afghanistan a failure”
I guess the statute of limitations on liberal Democrats pretending that they are in favor of the war in Afghanistan has run out. Afghanistan has, in many ways, has been cast as the "good" war when compared to our mission in Iraq. Over the past 8 years we were told that Iraq was the wrong place to be fighting the Irreconcilable Wing of Islam (IWoI) because it took our focus off of Afghanistan, the safe-haven for those responsible for 9/11. We were told that the battle in Afghanistan is the place were America still held the moral high ground. Tom Hanks told us in Charlie Wilson's War that we could not abandon the Afghani people again like the world did in the 1980's after it was done using it as the location for a proxy war between the Free West and Russian Soviets.
Apparently no one told Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA).

We can't leave Afghanistan unfinished. To solve the social problems at home we don't need to abdicate our duties in that country.
Newt: America At Risk
Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich is a man of ideas. He has spent the last decade since leaving congress pursuing answers to the nation's most pressing (and long-term) problems.
Speaker Gingrich recently spoke at The American Enterprise Institute in Washington D.C. on the topic of "America at Risk." Below is a brief clip from his speech at AEI, which was described as follows:
Almost nine years after the 9/11 attacks, the United States has yet to confront the threat posed by the extremist and irreconcilable wing of Islam. Newt Gingrich warns that now is the time to awaken from self-deception about the nature of our enemies and rebuild a bipartisan commitment, in Afghanistan and elsewhere, to defend America. Drawing on the lessons of Camus and Orwell, Gingrich will describes the dangers of a wartime government that uses language and misleading labels to obscure reality.
Newt in 2012, people. Get ready for it.
Good News From Pakistan
In today's Times of London we read this:
Pakistani forces have taken control of a warren of caves that served until recently as the nerve centre of the Taleban and al-Qaeda and sheltered Ayman al-Zawahiri, the second-in-command to Osama bin Laden.
“It was the main hub of militancy where al-Qaeda operatives had moved freely,” Major-General Tariq Khan, the Pakistan regional commander, said as he gave journalists a tour of Damadola yesterday.
The village, nestling among snow-capped peaks in the Bajaur region along the Afghan border, has been fought over for 16 months. It is the first time that the Pakistani Army has set foot in the village, which had long been dominated by the insurgents operating on the both sides of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
Pakistan is by no means a stable nation, but we ought to praise our allies in the War on Terror when they score a victory for our "side". There is REAL change in the attitude of the Pakistani military in terms of their willingness to help our efforts in Afghanistan.
Here is more on Pakistan's role from The Heritage Foundation.
