A Voice in the Wilderness In Defense of "Mere Conservatism"

Thomas Sowell: He is Legend

After taking about six weeks off from public appearances and interviews due to some health issues, Dr. Thomas Sowell re-emerged this past week with an intellectual fury.  He was on the Ricochet.com podcast.  He was on Hannity.  And for your viewing pleasure today, I am posting his interview on Fox Business Network's Nightly Scoreboard from last Friday evening. Topics include: Occupy Wall Street protests, trade with China, and the current political landscape.

Many of you are already fans of The Sowell, but if you're one of those people who has yet to familiarize yourself with any of his writings, it's time to start.

Arthur Brooks-Jim Wallis Debate

Wheaton College, in conjunction with The American Enterprise Institute, is hosting a debate for the ages this upcoming Thursday night between AEI president Dr. Arthur Brooks (pictured right) and President Obama's "spiritual adviser" Pastor Jim Wallis (pictured left).  abrookswallisweb

If you live in the Chicago-land area, and you don't come to this free event (7pm Thursday night, in the Edman Chapel), then the terrorists win.  Just kidding.  But you should come out to hear a candid discussion regarding the moral cases for both free market capitalism, and for the Left's "social justice" movement.   The whole thing will be moderated by former George W. Bush speechwriter, Michael Gerson.

From AEI's Common Sense Concept website (which I blog at, btw):

Recent events have renewed questions about the sinfulness of capitalist economics.  Rampant greed, high-profile instances of theft, and patterns of  “conspicuous consumption” rightfully cause Christians to question the morality of the market.  There is no perhaps no more vocal critic of capitalism from a Christian perspective than Jim Wallis.

Hope to see many of you Thursday evening!

Jim Wallis: The President’s Man

Jim Wallis is a self-described evangelical Christian and currently serves as President Obama's primary religious adviser.  Wallis means well, and seems to have a genuine heart for the poor and oppressed...but the man supports politicians and policies that are counter-productive (and in some cases, un-biblical).

My biggest problem with religious liberals is their endorsement of wealth redistribution via the federal government. Here is Wallis in his own words:

I will be writing an upcoming piece on "social justice", and Wallis is one of the most prominent religious leaders in the nation who fully endorses and promotes the term.  Until then check out this piece by Dr. Albert Mohler of Southern Theological Seminary on the controversy surrounding Glenn Beck's denouncement of it.

Glenn Beck on “Social Justice”

I came across this clip from a recent episode of the The Glenn Beck Show on Fox News Channel.  Regardless your opinion of the man, Beck is someone who is bringing uncomfortable, unpopular, and often, unknown, issues to the table.  Please watch this clip and let me know what you think.  I will be doing a full column on this subject matter in the next few weeks.

The Most Important Thing I’ve Seen In A While

Glenn Beck can be a handful to deal with, even for a conservative like me.  Most of you know the stereotype perpetrated by the media of who Beck is and what he is about.  Some of that is deserved; much of it isn't.

Regardless your opinion of the man, the past few episodes of Beck's Fox News show this week have been incredibly insightful and important.  Here is the opening clip from last night's show, and I cannot recommend that you watch all 5 parts (which can conveniently be found right here) highly enough.

There is a battle for the soul of this nation taking place right now. It is playing itself in theological, political, economic, educational, and entertainment arenas. Perhaps you are not called to engage the issues involved in all of these areas, but make no mistake about it: you must be involved in engaging at least one of these areas.

So which will it be?

What is “Mere Conservatism”?

The basic ideas, ideals, and values that generally define and characterize the central tenets of what today might be termed "modern conservative thought."

We believe that a proper understanding of history, economics, and theology leads to certain conclusions. Many of these are the same conclusions our Founding Fathers arrived at in constructing a "more perfect union."

All ideas and opinions are welcome; not all are correct.
